The four Handlungsfelder are the structural framework of the AEVO examination — every exam question maps to one of them. But more importantly, they describe the complete reality of what a qualified trainer actually does. Understanding them as a connected system, not as four separate boxes to memorise, is what makes the difference in the exam.
Why "action fields" and not "topics"
The German term Handlungsfeld translates literally as "action field" — a domain where a qualified professional must be competent to act. Not just to know about, but to do. The AEVO framework was built this way deliberately: it describes what trainers do, not what they know. Every exam question is grounded in this — what does a trainer do in this situation?
Handlungsfeld 1: Examine prerequisites and plan training
Before any training begins, a qualified trainer has to assess whether the conditions for training are in place. Is the company registered as a training company (Ausbildungsbetrieb)? Does the position correspond to a recognised training occupation (Ausbildungsberuf)? Is the trainer personally qualified — AdA certificate or equivalent?
Then comes the planning work: taking the national training framework (Ausbildungsrahmenplan) and creating an individual training plan (Ausbildungsplan) that maps to the specific company environment. Selecting apprentices — writing the job posting, conducting interviews, assessing candidates, signing the training contract.
Key legal references: BBiG §27–§37, requirements for the Ausbildungsvertrag, DSGVO for handling candidate data.
Handlungsfeld 2: Prepare training and set up the training environment
This field covers everything that needs to be in place before the training session begins. Physical environment — tools, materials, workspace. Organisational environment — coordination with the Berufsschule, scheduling, ensuring learning objectives are defined for each phase. The trainer who does this well makes the actual training sessions run smoothly. The trainer who skips this spends training time solving problems that could have been prevented.
Handlungsfeld 3: Execute training
This is the largest Handlungsfeld and the one with the most practical weight in the exam. It covers the actual delivery of training — the methods used, how the trainer motivates apprentices, how learning difficulties are recognised and addressed, how conflicts are handled, how progress is monitored and documented.
The Vier-Stufen-Methode is central here: explain, demonstrate, let the apprentice try with supervision, let the apprentice do it independently. Beyond this method, the field covers adapting training approach to different learning types, handling apprentices who are struggling or disengaged, and the legal framework that governs training practice — JArbSchG (youth protection), ArbZG (working time law), BetrVG (works council involvement).
Handlungsfeld 4: Conclude training
The end of the Ausbildung is its own professional domain. Preparing apprentices for the Abschlussprüfung (final examination) — what that involves, how to support systematic exam preparation, how to handle anxiety. Writing the Ausbildungszeugnis (training certificate) — what it must contain, the legal requirements around honest assessment. Supporting the transition to employment — references, recommendations, or decisions about hiring the qualified apprentice.
The evaluation component here is also about the training itself: what went well, what needs to change for the next cohort, what the trainer learned from this training relationship.

4 Handlungsfelder — system के रूप में समझें:
HF 1 — Prerequisites और Planning: Company registration check, Ausbildungsrahmenplan से Ausbildungsplan बनाना, apprentice selection, BBiG legal requirements।
HF 2 — Preparation: Environment ready करना — tools, materials, Berufsschule coordination, learning objectives define करना।
HF 3 — Execution (सबसे बड़ा field): Vier-Stufen-Methode, motivation, learning difficulties handle करना, conflicts, JArbSchG/ArbZG/BetrVG legal framework।
HF 4 — Conclusion: Final exam preparation, Ausbildungszeugnis लिखना, employment transition, training quality evaluation।
When you read through these four fields, which one feels most familiar from your existing professional experience — and which one will require the most preparation?
